Is the car industry facing a new era?

Donald Trump began his second term as US president and got straight to work. One of the areas he has identified as crucial to the health of US industry and the economy is automotive.

The new-old president immediately began making changes to strengthen the domestic automotive industry. His policies focus on promoting domestic production, reducing environmental regulations and imposing tariffs on imported goods. These measures are raising both hopes and concerns among automakers around the world.

Support for traditional motoring

Trump has already announced a move away from the previous administration's policies that promoted electric vehicles and the decarbonisation of transport. Instead, he plans to focus on traditional internal combustion vehicles, removing federal relief for electric cars and relaxing emissions standards and fuel economy standards. The aim is to increase US production, support domestic factories and reduce dependence on foreign component suppliers.

Duties and protectionism

One of the key elements of Trump's policy is the introduction of tariffs on imported goods, including cars from Europe and China. European manufacturers such as Volkswagen and Stellantis are particularly vulnerable due to their heavy reliance on sales in the US market.

The German automotive industry, in turn, has already voiced concerns that increased tariffs could seriously affect their business, especially as the US is one of the key markets for German cars.

In turn, US manufacturers such as General Motors and Ford may benefit from reduced foreign competition. However, the introduction of tariffs could also lead to an increase in the cost of imported components, which could affect the final price of vehicles for consumers. Analysts warn that such measures could trigger a trade war between the US and the European Union, which would have far-reaching consequences for the global economy.

What about electrics?

The move away from support for electric vehicles has raised concerns among sustainable transport advocates. The removal of subsidies and tax credits could slow the growth of this market segment in the US. However, Tesla, with its production facilities in the US, Berlin and Shanghai, may benefit from deregulation and reduced competition from other US manufacturers that are slower to transition to EV production.

International reactions

China, which was already subject to tariffs imposed by the previous administration, may not be significantly affected by the new tariffs. Chinese manufacturers such as BYD had already turned their attention to other markets, severely reducing their presence in the US.

In Europe, however, Trump's policies are of much greater concern. The European Union faces the challenge of finding an effective response to US protectionist measures. Experts suggest that Europe must respond firmly to threats to raise tariffs in order to protect its economic interests.

What are our prospects?

Donald Trump's policies are bringing significant changes to the global automotive industry. While US manufacturers can count on the support and protection of the domestic market, multinationals must prepare for new challenges related to tariffs and changing regulations. It will be crucial to watch how these actions will affect global supply chains, vehicle pricing and the direction of technological developments in the automotive industry.

In the face of these changes, manufacturers will need to adapt their strategies to meet new market realities. The ultimate impact of Trump's policies on the automotive industry will depend on many factors, including the reaction of other countries and the adaptation of manufacturers themselves.
