In view of the rapidly changing global reality, the World Economic Forum (WEF) has published a report with a very telling title - "Global Risks Report 2025".
Table of content
The aforementioned document identified the biggest risks for the world in 2025. The analysis is based on the opinions of more than 900 experts from almost all walks of life, including scientists, business people, officials and international organisations.
Escalation of conflicts
The main threat highlighted in the report is the escalation of armed conflicts between nations. More than 30 per cent of respondents ranked this factor as the most serious risk in the next twelve months.
This may not come as a surprise, however, as geopolitical tensions are steadily increasing, especially in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the Middle East. Moreover, there are also fears of an escalating duel for global influence between China and the US, as well as conflicts in East Asia, Japan, North Korea and Taiwan. The WEF notes that the current scenario is reminiscent of the most difficult times of the Cold War. Therefore, world leaders must work towards de-escalation and cooperation.
Extreme weather events
The second key threat is extreme weather events, which have gained incredible speed and massive proportions in recent years. Forest fires, floods and droughts are affecting more and more areas around the world, causing not only massive material damage, but also - and perhaps most importantly - humanitarian damage.
Experts warn of a worsening crisis due to quite serious delays in climate action.
Disinformation and social polarisation
Social media plays a decisive role in disinformation and polarisation. False information, conspiracy theories and mystifications are appearing with increasing frequency and are increasingly being used as a tool to influence public opinion.
The WEF report indicates that the fight against disinformation requires coordinated action at the international level, including media education and regulation.
Geo-economic tensions
In this category we have another challenge that distorts various aspects of the economy. This can mean trade wars and sanctions.
Changing trade policies and protectionism can disrupt supply chains and negatively affect the economies of many countries. Dialogue is therefore key to conflict resolution and most disputes in the arena of great power clashes.
The World Economic Forum's 2025 report is an important warning to the global community. The identification of key threats such as armed conflict, climate crisis, disinformation and geo-economic tensions should prompt political and business leaders and civil societies to take coordinated action to address these challenges.
Only through cooperation and a proactive approach will it be possible to ensure a stable and secure future for generations to come.
