Big and smaller steps. Time for a big breakthrough in the manufacturing sector?

Industries related to new technologies are waiting for the next big breakthrough. Something that will prove to be the next milestone, while also becoming a fuel for development, progress and improvement of the quality of life. Can the widely announced cooperation between Siemens and Google aspire to the name of such a "next step"? It's very possible.

More and more powerful devices appear on the market almost every year. Their power is greater, and the computing capabilities greater than ever, but it is hard to resist the impression that - while keeping all the proportions of course - we are talking only about evolutionary changes. However, if you think about whether there has been a gigantic breakthrough in the field of technology over the past few years, the answer will be quite simple. No.

A breakthrough on the horizon

In terms of everyday devices, the stagnation is clearly visible. What was the last great technological accelerator in this field? Of course, the development of smartphones and their entry into people's lives with great power. It changed absolutely everything, from the usual consumption of entertainment to the style of work. However, this revolutionary change took place in 2007 and since then, small technology has only been evolving.

It is different, of course, in areas such as transport, automotive or medicine. In them, thanks to the constantly developing branch of automation, from time to time we deal with breakthroughs on a large scale and everything indicates that we will have another one soon.

All thanks to the already announced cooperation between Siemens and Google Clouds, the aim of which will be an unprecedented on such a large scale integration of existing solutions for the automation of production processes in factories and industrial plants with the data cloud, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).

The introduction of the above solutions to large industry has been going on for some time, but the scale of the solution and the possibility of integrating activities in this way on a global basis is something that can be safely called a breakthrough.  - We haven't even reached the half of the potential of these technologies to transform the look of production halls - said Axel Lorenz, vice president of control, Siemens Digital Industries.

On a grand scale

So the whole idea is about its momentum. What has so far been the domain of individual production "islands" in plants, is to grow to a size that will cover all processes. - Many manufacturers still cannot go beyond their pilot programs. We want to make a real breakthrough and finally do it - continued Lorenz. - The combination of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies with Google Cloud solutions and those dedicated to Siemens in industrial terms will be an absolute revolution in the industry - he added.

What will this breakthrough be? At the opening of new opportunities that management will provide to such a great extent. Process harmonization and automation on an unprecedented scale is something that cannot be ignored.

Big and smaller steps

Omron also took a step forward by having a distribution agreement with OnRobot. Its importance may not have such a spectacular dimension as in the case of Siemens and Google, but such cooperation is to provide all customers of the company with much more flexibility when implementing specific solutions.

- OnRobot products are 100 percent compatible with OmronTM. This, in turn, provides manufacturers with fully cooperative, flexible and secure solutions that work from day one, confessed OnRobot CEO Enrico Krog Iversen.

Fernando Vaquerizo, Marketing Manager of Stationary Products at Omron Europe, was also satisfied with the signing of the contract. In his opinion, such a move allowed to significantly expand the range of opportunities that the company can offer its clients. - Our portfolio of collaborative robotic solutions has grown significantly. This, in turn, ensures the versatility and ease of use of the equipment we offer - he concluded.

As you can see, industry leaders are not idle. Some, such as Omron or Mitsubishi Electric, which entered into a partnership with TeamViewer to take customer service to the next level, take smaller but regular steps forward. Siemens and Google, in turn, intend to take a step ... in seven-mile boots.
