Intel is betting on artificial intelligence

At Intel, they are well aware of which way the wind is blowing, which is why they want to enter the area of artificial intelligence even more strongly. The company recently announced its far-reaching plans by setting up a new independent company called Articul8.

The creation of another offshoot of Intel is nothing new, as the company already split into companies last year to deal exclusively with chip production for the telecommunications and defence industries. The new creation, in turn, is to be solely responsible for research into generative artificial intelligence, which, at a time of rushing AI development, seems to be the only right and proper way to go.

A dangerous loophole

Intel's initiative also has a second bottom. For, as Articul8 CEO Arun Subramaniyan pointed out, there is a very dangerous gap in the area of generative AI. Details were not disclosed, but the company wants to work on securing it properly

This is, of course, only one side of the coin, as this first goal is to stay in the race of the world's largest chip manufacturers. AI has been in the game for some time now and today the creation of all new technological concepts is much easier, as is their implementation. However, the effectiveness of such activities and their safety is still uncertain and this is what Articul8's research is expected to address in the coming weeks and month.

The battle continues

Intel also recognises the risk of falling behind in the global race for the AI chip market. There, Nvidia currently dominates by offering specialised chips for AI computing. In order not to lose ground, Intel is investing in the development of its own chips, but it also realises that hardware infrastructure alone is not enough.

Articul8 will therefore take on the development of generative AI, competing with services such as ChatGPT and Bard from Google. This indicates Intel's understanding that, beyond just specialised chips, large language models and advanced AI algorithms are key.

Collaboration and funding

The decision to create Articul8 is also the result of a collaboration with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Intel, in collaboration with BCG, conducted a study on the needs of enterprises to implement AI. The results of this research prompted the creation of the new company, whose platform is ready for use in the aerospace, semiconductor, telecommunications and finance sectors.

The launch of Articul8 makes sense not only from a business perspective, but also because of Intel's specialisation in hardware. Articul8 will focus mainly on AI software development, allowing the corporation to operate faster and more flexibly.

Intel continues its strategy of attracting external capital for specific business units. Articul8 has attracted investment from the likes of DigitalBridge, Fin Capital, Mindset Ventures, Communitas Capital, GiantLeap Capital, GS Futures and Zain Group.

Success will not be easy to come by. The competition is also running its course, but one thing is certain. Whoever stays in the peloton of artificial intelligence work automatically sets themselves up in a winning position.
