On a knife-edge

On a knife-edge

What are the consequences of Nancy Pelosi's recent visit to Taiwan? Huge. Some people predict an escalation of tensions that may lead to unforeseen consequences.

From a political point of view, it can be said that the Americans drew a fairly well-known card called "to protect peace, sometimes it is worth taking the risk of war." It may sound ridiculous, of course, but we are talking about a great geopolitical game, the effects of which can echo loudly in every corner of the world. This in turn - from the point of view of an ordinary person - does not have to seem logical at all.

Powder keg

Such was the visit of Nancy Pelosi, the president of the House of Representatives in Taiwan, which was immediately recognized by China as an act of almost hostile aggression. After all, it is no secret that Beijing considers the island its territory of influence, and that Taiwan itself has long seemed to be a trigger for the global conflict.

The Chinese reacted very strongly and decisively. Shortly after Pelosie's visit, they organized the greatest maneuver in history around the island, sending the Americans a clear message.

The fact that China classically considers Taiwan its sphere of influence is, of course, only one side of the coin. The second is the importance of the island, as well as the Taiwan Strait, places of absolutely strategic importance from the point of view of global production and economy.

Beijing has recognized that it intends to conduct regular maneuvers in the region from now on, and this, in turn, may result in hiccups in other regions. China itself must also act in this situation on the side for several key reasons.

Be careful, because...

The first is something that we have already written about many times, and which actually affects the entire economy quite strongly from the beginning of the pandemic. It is, of course, about semiconductors and their production. Components without which the production of many devices from the electronic, automotive, medical and military industries is simply impossible. The pandemic has already severely strained this market, but it may turn out that the turmoil in the Pacific will be much more deplorable.

As reported by "TrendForce", Taiwan, which is at the center of the great geopolitical game, is the undisputed leader when it comes to generating revenues from the production of semiconductors. The giant in this particular case is Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC), which scoops over half of this billion-dollar cake. Moreover, if you go even further in the statistics, you will find that Taiwan accounts for 92 percent of the total production of these most advanced semiconductors.

Who will benefit?

But that's not all. China has announced that it is suspending the import of many products from Taiwan, a glance at the Bloomberg report is enough to see that as much as 40 percent. Taiwanese exports concern Hong Kong and mainland China.

Following this lead, we come to the aforementioned maneuver of the Chinese fleet in the region, which can seriously affect and, as already barely clinging, to global supply chains. To realize it better, it is worth knowing that as much as 88 percent. Ships - by tonnage - sailed this year through the Taiwan Strait. Further escalation or even complete blockade of the island may have consequences of unimaginable dimensions.

It would seem, therefore, that escalating the conflict is not convenient for anyone, but let us remember that we are still talking about a great geopolitical game.
