New horizons for generative artificial intelligence. Siemens and Amazon are getting into the game

Siemens and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are strengthening their partnership, enabling companies in a wide variety of industries to more easily build and scale applications based on generative artificial intelligence.

Democratisation of technology

Experts from areas such as engineering, manufacturing, logistics, insurance or banking will be able to create new applications and improve existing ones using the latest generative AI technology. Siemens is integrating Amazon Bedrock, a service that offers a selection of advanced base models from leading AI companies through a single API, while ensuring security, privacy and accountable AI functions. This integration is with the low-code Mendix platform, a leader in the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio.

- By integrating Amazon Bedrock with our low-code platform, we are democratising generative AI technology, enabling everyone to create applications that are key to competitiveness, resilience and sustainability - said Roland Busch, CEO of Siemens, - Creating smart applications without programming knowledge accelerates innovation and helps companies cope with skills shortages, he added.

In the same vein, AWS's Adam Selipsky said he believes that the new flexible solutions will allow many industries to move forward, and at a much faster pace than has been the case to date. - AWS and Siemens' efforts are enabling companies around the world to create solutions using generative AI, he said.

- This collaboration builds on our 10-year relationship with Siemens, offering customers in every industry a flexible, customised and secure environment to take advantage of the new capabilities of generative AI, he added.

Easier integration = faster development

The new combination allows customers to choose the generative AI model that best fits their specific case and then quickly and securely integrate this model into their applications. The process thus becomes simpler, faster and more efficient.

Previously, when integrating generative AI models, developers had to obtain access credentials and write specialised function code. Now, with Mendix's integration with Amazon Bedrock, this can be done with just a few clicks. Teams can create intelligent, industry-specific applications without the need for programming expertise, and users can easily integrate with information using a graphical interface and the simplicity of drag-and-drop commands.

What does this look like in practice?

This innovation allows Mendix customers to use generative AI to increase productivity in their teams. For example, a factory worker can find machine documentation faster by generating relevant visualisations without having to manually search through databases, manuals and records.

A production engineer can also use generative AI to suggest machine adjustments to improve productivity, receiving suggestions for equipment adjustments, maintenance or even spare parts to optimise factory productivity. Customers do not need to build their own AI infrastructure, while retaining full control over their data with the highest level of security and privacy.

Who will benefit?

Generative AI technology can power applications with functionalities such as summarising and analysing long technical or legal documents, translating content into different languages or recognising images. Financial firms can integrate automated fraud detection into their software, while car factory workers can improve quality based on AI analysis of millions of data points on the production line. With access to different base models in Amazon Bedrock, users can easily select the best model for their specific task and integrate it with just a few clicks.

This collaboration extends the long-standing partnership between AWS and Siemens to facilitate the use of IT and the cloud so that it can be easily integrated into applications and machine processes, making collaboration seamless.

Currently, more than 50 million users worldwide use more than 200,000 applications built with the low-code Mendix platform, available as part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio. Low-code platforms are expected to grow significantly, and solutions of the future, which not so long ago were a melody of the future, are now widely available.
