How to efficiently manage spare parts availability?

The management of availability of spare parts is influenced by factors such as: purchasing strategy analysis or integration and reliability of logistics processes. Let's take a look at this problem in order to optimize the production process.

The availability of spare parts is influenced by the analysis of the purchasing strategy.

We should strive for this so that the purchase strategy will be effective and will ensure the continuity of the production process, thus minimizing the cost of production - resulting, among others, from the unplanned stoppages. The golden measure will be to coordinate the size of supply and demand, which has a significant impact on the storage process. We should create a strategy based on reports maintained inside the company that cover the consumption frequency, operation, time of spare parts delivery during failures etc.

In order to correctly interpret the problem of availability of spare parts, it is necessary to care for proper integration and reliability of logistics processes.

These words sound trivially, however, each company should develop its own standards which will help to manage the availability of spare parts. Let's refer for this purpose to the cause-effect analysis according to the Balanced Score-Card methodology. It includes an analysis of satisfaction of Client's needs which focuses on the organizational and operational approach, the choice of methods of replenishing spare parts (the criticality of the needs of the individual parts in respect of maintaining the continuity of the production process).
The methodology is also based on costs of spare parts availability - e.g. transport, storage, stocks, etc.

Reliability in the service of availability management

Reliability in production can be considered multidimensionally. Firstly, as the reliability of the delivery - that is keeping the agreed deadlines or the conformity of the goods with the order.

Secondly, the reliability of transport - the essence of the logistics of each company which should be punctual, temporary and take a course without prejudice to the delivered commodity. Thirdly - the infrastructure reliability which is based on the analysis of factors such as teamwork and supporting equipment (equipment, devices).

By analyzing all these aspects of reliability, we can more effectively manage the availability of spare parts. Let's take them into consideration in order to optimize the production process and to protect ourselves against stoppages and bottlenecks.
