Classification by frequency of consumption - analysis based on data from registers or shift logs
In order to classify according to the frequency of consumption, we should specify the range of items that will be included in it. These will be groups and classes of spare parts and categories of service or maintenance performed. Later, we will have to collect and analyze data on individual items - it is obvious that without this we will not be able to objectively assess the frequency of consumption. Data is best collected from registers, IT systems, UR shift logs or service cards. However, for the analysis to be reliable, it must be assumed that all material items from a given period will be taken into account - i.e. not only used, but also taken into storage or stored. We should remember that the collected data are presented in units of measurement adequate for given spare parts.
Spare parts classified according to the frequency of consumption after data collection are divided into: non-issued indexes, indexes issued once a month or more often, issued more often than once every six months and issued less often than once every six months. Such analysis will allow us to optimize the economy of spare parts in our company.
Classification by criticality - from employee decisions to the AHP method
To effectively classify criticality, all our spare parts must be divided into usable and non-usable ones. Then we divide the parts into: rotating and non-rotating spare parts. The former are the ones that were used for the needs of works involved in Maintenance and the latter were never used, despite their presence in the warehouse. We classify non-rotating parts as follows: usable and non-usable spare parts. The former are those that were not used in the analyzed period, but can be used in the future. Unused spare parts are characterized by the fact that they cannot be used or worn due to the lack of machines and devices to which they would fit. They are also inoperable due to the loss of their properties.
The criticality assessment can be carried out based on the decisions of Maintenance employees based on their experience and professionalism. However, if we doubt the rationality of decisions of our subordinates, we can use a multi-criteria hierarchical method of analyzing decision problems in the decision-making process, e.g. AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process). It is a reliable and authoritative method in which there is no room for errors.
