The main driving force behind ABB's heavy capital expenditure is the necessity to align industrial manufacturing with new ecological realities and strict European Union regulations. Traditionally, medium-voltage switchgear relied heavily on sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) - a gas with excellent insulating properties but also recognized as one of the most potent greenhouse gases in the world. ABB's new investments aim to fundamentally alter this status quo.
Half of the announced budget - a staggering $100 million - will be allocated to building a brand-new, ultra-modern manufacturing facility in Dalmine, Italy. This site will focus on producing air-insulated switchgear, innovative SF₆-free technological solutions, and advanced circuit breakers. The remaining $100 million will be distributed across the company’s key existing factories scattered throughout Europe. Beyond Poland, capital boosts will be funneled into facilities in Rakovski (Bulgaria), Vaasa (Finland), Ratingen (Germany), and Skien (Norway). The scale of this undertaking directly corresponds with forecasts from the International Energy Agency, which project that electricity's share in global final energy consumption will rise from the current 20% to nearly 30% by 2030.
Przasnysz at the Forefront of the Technological Transformation
Including the Przasnysz facility in the select group of European factories designated for funding sends a clear signal regarding the vital role Polish engineering and production lines play in the corporation's ecosystem. The financial resources directed to the Mazovia region will enable a substantial expansion of manufacturing potential. The Polish plant will focus on manufacturing highly sophisticated equipment, including gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), vacuum circuit breakers, as well as specialized relays and grid automation products.
This expansion will directly contribute to shorter lead times for customers across the continent, enhancing the flexibility and resilience of European supply chains. The decision to allocate such massive capital into European factories is not an accident but a precisely calculated response to fundamental structural changes in the global economy. Executive leadership at the Swiss-Swedish group explicitly points to the macroeconomic factors forcing the energy sector to radically accelerate its investment cycles.
"Demand is being driven by structural shifts, from grid modernization and the integration of renewable energy sources to the growth of data centers and the transition to more sustainable technologies," emphasizes Morten Wierod, Chief Executive Officer of ABB.
The CEO also notes that the ultimate goal of the entire program is to properly prepare the company for the incoming wave of orders from utilities and heavy industry. "This investment program will help to scale up our medium-voltage operations in Europe to meet the growing demand for electricity," adds Morten Wierod.
